Hugo & Me - Review

Sprog on the Tyne Hugo and Me Review
  • Gifted product review

Hello, today I've got a bit of a different post to my usual days out reviews. North East mam Victoria got in touch with me and asked if I'd like to review her new clothing venture Hugo & Me. I love to support local brands and all the more so when the founders are new parents, so of course it was a yes from us. We were thrilled to receive two gorgeous cream outfits, as I do love to dress my two the same when I can get away with it. Twinning is winning and all that.

The Photos in this post are across two days out - both recommended - at Cheeseburn Grange and Broomhouse Farm

About Hugo and Me

As Hugo & Me are a local brand, I asked Victoria to tell us about setting up the business.

I'm Victoria and along with my partner Dominic we are the mummy and daddy team behind Hugo & Me. We met at Newcastle University. I am originally from Manchester but after moving to Newcastle when I was 18 I have just fallen in love with the city (and with Dominic) and I've never left. Now we both work as research scientists for Newcastle University.
Last May we welcomed our gorgeous little bundle of joy Hugo into the world. He completely tipped our world upside down and has been the most amazing gift to us. Hugo has been the inspiration behind setting up our online business Hugo & Me.
From being pregnant I always struggled to find lovely baby boy clothes. Most the high street shops sold stereotypical blue and red clothing with images of cars or tractors for boys. I was looking for more neutral/unisex clothing of good quality. So I started shopping online, via Instagram. I found some amazing brands of organic babywear most of which were based outside of the UK.
Many of our friends and family commented on Hugo's lovely clothes and asked where we had bought them from, so the idea came to mind to create an online retail store for all these amazing brands we had found so other parents with our taste had a place to shop.

The brands we currently sell are:
House of Jamie - Dutch brand of neutral and unisex eco-friendly clothing.
EarthSoul - A UK based brand created by a talented young mum who hand makes all of her products with super organic or supersoft materials.
JR Authentics - A Canadian brand whose products are all made from 100% organic cotton and use water-based non-toxic dyes
Molly & Moo - A lovely UK brand of neutral/scandi designed baby accessories
Boumy - A dutch brand of gorgeous fair trade soft leather baby footwear
We choose our brands based on the best quality products made with organic or eco-friendly materials with a neutral, unisex and simplistic design.
This ensures style conscious parents, like us can dress our baby in stylish outfits that are soft and kind to their skin, great quality so wash and wear well andcan be saved and used for the next baby.
Living in Newcastle we love nothing more than being outside and with so much here on our doorstep we go for lots of family walks and bike rides. So what Hugo wears has to withstand sun, sand, mud, rain. Whatever the weather we are always out so its great to have found really good quality clothing that can keep up with Hugo and his activities and withstand the test of time.
We will be appearing at some great Baby Shows around the North East  and eventually we hope to open our very own Hugo & Me Boutique in Newcastle so all of our customers in the North East will have a lovely shop to buy from as well as our online store.

THE PACKAGING

I LOVE getting parcels through the post and this one was such a treat. Both outfits had been wrapped individually in Hugo & Me tissue paper and finished off with some very pretty string. I almost didn't want to open it and ruin how lovely it looked. It would be ideal if you were sending a gift direct to the recipient (if you are looking for a new baby pressie then check out the Baby Bunny Set and consider yourself to have a heart of stone if you don't squeal with the cuteness). Inside each item was wrapped individually in some quirky designed cellophane.

Little Toddler's Set

We were sent a House of Jamie Long Tunic Sweat and House of Jamie Bow Tie Leggings both in the colour Sand. It's made from 95% cotton and so so soft to touch. We generally dress the toddlers in brightish colours, so loved having having a cleaner and simpler look. My husband did suggest that when we had them both dressed in the full sets together that they were slightly reminicient of one of The Backstreet Boys videos, but if it's good enough for them it's good enough for us!

I adored the extra touches on both of the sets, but Little Toddler's especially. The bow ties on the leggings are so sweet and make them stand out when we are choosing what to put her in on a morning. The tunic was also lovely, it was longer at the back, and had a gorgeous ribbon to tie to secure it rather than poppers or fiddly buttons. The outfit is really distinctive, and I think you can tell from the look and feel of it that it's a much better quality than the stuff we normally buy from the usual high street stores.

Big Toddler's Set

We were sent a House of Jamie Classic Cardigan and House of Jamie Baggy Pants, in the colour Sand, for my big toddler. I think that an all cream outfit is a bit more unusual for a boy, but I loved it when they were worn together. Again both of the items were 95% cotton and so soft. The cardigan is nice and thick so it can be worn just on its own rather than over another top. I thought that the patches on the elbows and the big iridescent buttons were really nice touches.

Durability

The main reason that we don't buy many light coloured clothes is because, like most toddlers, my two are as messy and clumsy as you can get, I would worry that we would get them ruined really quickly. But I've been so impressed with these items. We've had them for about 6 weeks now, and they've been worn loads. As you can see from these photos they've been in the woods, where the kids have been playing on slides and climbing. They have got mucky, but each time they've washed really well - all of the stains have lifted and they still feel really soft.

The whole experience of receiving clothes from Hugo & Me has been excellent, from packaging to wearability. I love that the clothes are ethically made, neutral and give me the option of dressing my boy and girl toddlers in the same clothes. Whenever I can I like to support local brands, so I'm sure I'll be adding Hugo & Me's website to my favourites for clothes for the kids and new baby gifts.

Hugo & Me have a huge range of children's clothes and gifts, including babygrows, bibs, shoes and blankets. Their social media pages often have details of special offers or occassionally competitions, their facebook page is Hugo & Me and Instagram is Hugo_and_Me.
